Split twelve into ten and two

Twelve groups can be split into ten groups and two groups. For 12 × 8, combine eighty and sixteen. Thinking of a dozen objects can also make twelve feel less abstract.

12 × 8 = 10 × 8 + 2 × 8 = 80 + 16 = 96

Check your reasoning

Do not add only two to the ten-times answer. Twelve groups of eight need two more groups of eight: sixteen more, not two.

Neighbouring facts differ by 12. If you know 12 × 6 = 72, add 12 to find 12 × 7: 72 + 12 = 84.

Try it yourself

Say or write an answer before opening each question. If you get stuck, use the method above, then try that fact again later without looking.

12 × 3 = ?

12 × 3 = 36. Reversing the factors gives 3 × 12 = 36 too.

12 × 7 = ?

12 × 7 = 84. Reversing the factors gives 7 × 12 = 84 too.

12 × 8 = ?

12 × 8 = 96. Reversing the factors gives 8 × 12 = 96 too.

12 × 11 = ?

12 × 11 = 132. Reversing the factors gives 11 × 12 = 132 too.

12 × 12 = ?

12 × 12 = 144. Reversing the factors gives 12 × 12 = 144 too.

Connect the tables
