For 7 × 8, follow the row marked 7 to the column marked 8. The answer is 56. It works in reverse too: row 8 and column 7 give the same result.

Three patterns to explore

The diagonal shows square numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16 and onward to 144. Each is a number multiplied by itself.
Products mirror across the diagonal. Both 3 × 8 and 8 × 3 equal 24.
The gap between neighbouring answers equals the row number. In the sixes row, products increase by six.
