1. Start with equal groups

Draw three rows of four dots: 3 × 4 = 12. Turn the picture around and four rows of three dots give the same total. Connect the symbols to something you can count before trying to answer quickly.

2. Choose a few facts

Choose three facts from the seven times table, for example. First work them out using five groups and two groups. Then say the whole fact and answer, rather than the answer alone.

3. Try without looking

Hide the answers and mix the order. After a mistake, look at a worked example and explain how it works. Try a different question before returning to the difficult one. You do not need to add time pressure.

4. Return another day

Keep a few familiar facts for the next session and mix in something new when you are ready. A short session may be easier to fit into a day. Five minutes is a practical suggestion, not a promise of a particular result.

Use MathJolt as part of practice

Practice gives you 12 questions per session and uses earlier answers in this browser to select facts. Hints can be switched on or off. Read about Practice and Jolt Run before choosing a mode. Game indicators describe your activity in the game; they are not school grades.
