Start from five groups
Six groups are five groups plus one more. For 6 × 7, use 5 × 7 = 35 and add seven. Another route is to double three groups: 3 × 7 = 21, then 21 + 21 = 42.
6 × 7 = 5 × 7 + 7 = 35 + 7 = 42
The complete table
| Fact | Answer |
|---|---|
| 6 × 1 | 6 |
| 6 × 2 | 12 |
| 6 × 3 | 18 |
| 6 × 4 | 24 |
| 6 × 5 | 30 |
| 6 × 6 | 36 |
| 6 × 7 | 42 |
| 6 × 8 | 48 |
| 6 × 9 | 54 |
| 6 × 10 | 60 |
| 6 × 11 | 66 |
| 6 × 12 | 72 |
Check your reasoning
Add one whole group, not one object. From 5 × 7 to 6 × 7, the answer increases by seven, not by one.
Neighbouring facts differ by 6. If you know 6 × 6 = 36, add 6 to find 6 × 7: 36 + 6 = 42.
Try it yourself
Say or write an answer before opening each question. If you get stuck, use the method above, then try that fact again later without looking.
6 × 3 = ?
6 × 3 = 18. Reversing the factors gives 3 × 6 = 18 too.
6 × 7 = ?
6 × 7 = 42. Reversing the factors gives 7 × 6 = 42 too.
6 × 8 = ?
6 × 8 = 48. Reversing the factors gives 8 × 6 = 48 too.
6 × 11 = ?
6 × 11 = 66. Reversing the factors gives 11 × 6 = 66 too.
6 × 12 = ?
6 × 12 = 72. Reversing the factors gives 12 × 6 = 72 too.
