Take one group away from ten

Nine groups are ten groups minus one. For nine groups of seven, start at seventy and remove seven. This gives a useful check even when you think you remember the answer.

9 × 7 = 10 × 7 − 7 = 70 − 7 = 63

Check your reasoning

Subtract the other factor, not always nine. For 9 × 7 you subtract seven from seventy; for 9 × 8 you subtract eight from eighty.

Neighbouring facts differ by 9. If you know 9 × 6 = 54, add 9 to find 9 × 7: 54 + 9 = 63.
