Use half of ten groups
Five groups are half as many as ten equal groups. Ten groups of eight make eighty, so five groups of eight make forty. The answers end alternately in five and zero.
5 × 8 = 80 ÷ 2 = 40

Check your reasoning
A number ending in zero or five might belong to this table, but still check the number of groups. 5 × 7 is 35, not 30.
Neighbouring facts differ by 5. If you know 5 × 6 = 30, add 5 to find 5 × 7: 30 + 5 = 35.
